The cult of Pudicity, goddess of modesty and chastity, existed during the Roman Republic, but it only appeared on coins under Trajan and his second- century AD successors. It appears here on a coin of Bruttia Crispina (AD 164-191), since the summer of AD 178 the very wealthy, but also reportedly beautiful, wife of the Emperor Commodus (AD 161-180-192). Her beauty on this portrait suggests that the coin was struck before she was banished to the island of Capri in AD 182 (possibly after a plot to have her husband murdered - or more simply because she had been unfaithful).
