Julia Maesa (218-224) - Denier - Rome (220-222).
Magnifique exemplaire.
Exemplaire de la vente Aureo et Calico 300 du 9 novembre 2017, N° 156.
3.09g - C. 45 - RIC IV 271
FDC - NGC MS (5/5 et 4/5)

This coin type refers to the Felicitas Saeculi, the prosperity of the age, which can be seen as rather ironic - or at least as pure propaganda - if one considers the context of its strike. As the sister of Julia Domna, Julia Maesa long remained in the shadow of the Imperial family, but her role changed after the suicide of her sister and the murder of her nephew Caracalla in AD 217, and she was responsible for the overthrow of Macrinus and the accession to power of her grandson Elagabalus in AD 218. But he proved unstable, and she encouraged his murder (and his mother's murder) in AD 222, having her other grandson Alexander Severus hailed as emperor instead.
