Superbe à FDC - NGC CHOICE AU (5/5 et 3/5)
The reverse shows the temple of Vesta with a curule chair inside (symbol of praetorian power). Around it, in the fields, are an urn and a voting-tablet inscribed AC (Absolvo / Condemno) which refers to the moneyer's ancestor, Lucius Cassius Longinus Ravilla, who had introduced a change in the voting system in 137 BC (introducing secret ballots with his Lex Cassia Tabellaria) and was famous for showing great severity in 113 BC during a famous court case against three Vestal Virgins accused of inchastity. See W. Hollstein, Die stadtrömische Münzprägung der Jahre 78-50 v. Chr. zwischen politischer Aktualität und Familienthematik, Munich 1993, pp. 304 sqq. Obviously, the bust might be Vesta, but it has also been suggested that it could be Libertas.
