The superb nearly-facing head of Demeter, the goddess who protected the crops, is an appropriate obverse to the barley ear depicted on the reverse of this coin, which had become a civic emblem on Metapontine coins from the mid-fifth century BC onwards. The importance of grain to the city's exports explains these unusual iconographic choices, at a time when mythological types were more frequently chosen.
