This coinage, issued before the capitulation of the city of Akragas to the Carthaginians in 406 BC, was probably used to pay the mercenaries who defended the city against the Punic forces. Contemporary issues were struck at Gela, Stiela and Kamarina, before refugees fled - of fear rather than actual defeat - toward Syracuse. See Christof Boehringer, "Zu Finanzpolitik und Münzprägung des Dionysios von Syrakus", in Greek numismatics and archaeology: essays in honor of Margaret Thompson, Wetteren 1979, pp. 9-32, pls 38-39. It bears the name of a magistrate which is also found on contemporary tetradrachms (ref. SNG ANS 1000).
