Spes, who is depicted holding a flower in right hand and raising the hem of her stola (the long dress which was feminine equivalent to the men's toga) with her left hand, was the goddess of Hope and the Future, and she could regularly be found on emissions issued in relation to successions, so this coin may date to AD 136 (adoption of Aelius) or AD 138 (adoption of Antoninus). A similar depiction can be found on sestertii of Claudius, whose birthday on 1 August was the day of the vota to Spes; and on this coin of Hadrian it was deemed unnecessary to inscribe her name on the coin - as the viewers would have recognised its iconography. The goddess had several temples and altars in Rome (notably a temple in the Forum Holitorium, the columns of which have been incorporated into the church of San Nicola in Carcere), and it is likely that there was at least one statuary prototype for this coin's design. Hadrian struck very few gold quinarii, and the rare examples that have survived tend to be found in worn condition, suggesting an intense usage.
