Constantinus III (407-411) - AR Siliqua (Lugdunum AD 408-411, 1.42 g) - DN CONSTANTINVS PF AVG Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / VICTORIA AAVGGG (!) Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victoria and sceptre (RIC X 1531 / RSC 4b) - good VF with a bold protrait, RRR. Constantine III was elevated to Augustus in Britain in 407. He soon crossed over to Gaul and extended his influence to Spain. In 409 Constantinus III obtained the recognition of Honorius, however, but lost Britain and Spain. In 410 there was a dispute with Honorius, in 411 Constantinus III became besieged at his headquarters in Arelate and, after a relief army had been defeated, fled to a church and cast off the purple. The former emperor was captured and sent to Italy, but murdered before reaching Honorius. His head was exhibited in Ravenna from September 18, 411.
