RETIREMENT OF A POLICE OFFICER
Sergeant George Fay, of Rockhampton, has received notification of his retirement on pension after 31 years of faithful service in the Queensland Police Force, (says the "Record"). It may be mentioned that before a police officer is allowed to leave the service on pension he must have served at least 30 years in the force, or be recommended as unfit for service by the Medical Board, and he must, during that period, have served faithfully and well, and had no "black marks" allowed against his name.
Joining the force as an ordinary constable in Brisbane on January 25, 1879, Sergeant Fay did street duty, subsequently going into the C.I. Branch in Brisbane. After a couple of years' service in this Department, Sergeant Fay received his first promotion, being made an Acting-Sergeant in charge of section duty. So successful was this police official, that he was given charge of the inquiry branch into deaths and fires for the whole of the metropolitan area. During the 1893 flood in Brisbane, Sergeant Fay was a conspicuous figure in flood work and he was the recipient of hearty congratulations from the then Commissioner of Police, and the present Home Secretary, as Chairman of the Hamilton Shire Council. After 14 years duty in the Brisbane district, Sergeant Fay was transferred to Ipswich, and after seven years' stay in that city, he was transferred to Maryborough.
During his residence there, Sergeant Fay received further promotion to the position of Sergeant. In 1903, Sergeant Fay received travelling orders to Rockhampton, and here he has remained ever since. The retiring Sergeant has been recognised as a very capable police officer, and one who was never afraid to do his duty. He was well liked among his fellow officers, and his departure from among the "boys in blue" will be greatly missed. Sergeant Fay's retirement from the force which is entirely at his own request, dates as from April 1st and it is his intention to reside in Brisbane, where his family is resident at the present moment.
