GROUP OF FOUR: 1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. R813 Nanako. All medals impressed. Extremely fine and very rare with R prefix serial number.

R (Rabaul) was the serial number prefix used for indigenous Papuan and New Guineans enlisted in M Special Unit Infantry Battalion.

Nanako of Turechm Village in the Sub District of Buin and the District of Kieta, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea; Enl.08Jul1945 as a Private in M Special Unit Infantry; Died 22Jul1945 of natural causes.

M Special Unit was a joint Allied special reconnaissance unit formed in 1943, the successor of the Coastwatchers Unit, and came under the control of the Service Reconnaissance Department. It was primarily an intelligence gathering unit and operated for long periods of time in the Pacific Theatre of combat behind enemy lines and mostly going undetected. It was disbanded on 10 November 1945 after the end of World War II.
