This coin is part of Hadrian's "Travel series", which documented his visits to the provinces of the empire. His tours apparently served to inspect the borders of the empire which had experienced a significant expansion under Trajan, though of course Italy, as the centre of the empire at this time, did not have any boarders or outposts and was 'visited' as Hadrian passed through at the beginning or end of his travels.
