The reverse image was designed by Giovanni Hamerani in 1694, and is taken from a painting by il Guercino [Giovanni Francesco Barbieri], used for the first time for the Centenary Competition in 1695 by The Accademia di San Luca. The Accademia was founded in 1593 as an association of artists in Rome, under the directorship of Federico Zuccari with the purpose of elevating the work of 'artists', which included painters, sculptors and architects, above that of mere craftsmen. The competition was intended as an annual event but was not always so. The prizes, when awarded, were given in three classes to the three disciplines of painting, sculpture and architecture.
