The Classis Misenensis (Fleet of Misenum) was the senior fleet of the Roman Imperial Navy, having been founded by Augustus in 27 BC when the ships were moved from the port of Ostia to a new harbour on the Bay of Naples. Awarded the honorific praetoria by Vespasian, the classis Misenensis, together with the classis Ravennatis, formed the naval counterpart of the Praetorian Guard.
