Head, the Coinage of Lydia and Persia, London 1877, p. 45, 66, pl. 3, 12 (Uncertain Phoenician City); Traité II.2, 806, pl. 116, 3 (Satrapes et dynastes en Phénicie, Palestine, Arabie, 10.65g). 10.77g, 22mm, 11h.

Near Very Fine; test-cut to reverse. The third recorded example of a type never previously offered in a public sale.

From the inventory of a German dealer.

The first known king of the Sidonian dynasty was Baalshillem (B'LŠLM), subsequently known as Baalshillem I (c. 425-410/7 BC). He was succeeded by his son Abdamon ('BD'MN) a little later, who was himself succeeded by his son Baana (BA'NA') in about 409/406-402 BC, who was succeeded by his son Baalshillem II in 401 BC.

The weight standard of this series is based on the double Lydian/Persian siglos staters that prevailed in Asia Minor and was presumably issued by Sidon to facilitate trade in this area. For a similar, but un-epigraphic issue with a bull standing to left on the reverse, cf. Roma E-66, lot 520 and CNG E-431, lot 244.
