Cheltenham Golf Club, founded in March 1891 on the lower slopes of Cleeve Common, is now known as the Cotswold Hills Golf Club. Its first president was John Scott, 3rd Earl of Eldon (1845-1926), who lived at Stowell Park. The course was laid out by Tom Morris of St Andrews and construction was supervised by David Brown, the professional at Malvern who taught Queen Victoria to play golf
