Baskin, also from Philadelphia, greatly admired Eakins, the feeling summarised when writing of a portrait print "I venerate Thomas Eakins, America's greatest painter. . . .". The medal commemorates the then almost-completed restoration of Eakins' house at 1729 Mount Vernon Street, Philadelphia.
