The twin 5.2 miles (8.37km) tunnels were officially opened on 5 July 1909 in presence of Emperor Franz Joseph.
Edmund Hellmer (1850-1935), was appointed a Professor at the Academy in Vienna in 1879 and, from 1882 to 1892, was a member of the faculty there. The medallist, sculptor and painter, Emil Fuchs was one of Hellmer's most prominent students. In 1897, he had been one of the founders of the Vienna Secession.
