Originally the Miners Association, it was founded in 1858 by Robert Hunt FRS and the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society. Within a year it was expanded to the Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devon. Whilst the medal is unsigned, the impressed number guarantees it to be from the Wyon archival collection.
