Rupert's Land was a vast British territory stretching all around Hudson Bay and named after Prince Rupert, the first Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company. Robert Machray (1831–1904), Scottish-born first Primate of the Church of England in Canada, was appointed Bishop of Rupert's Land in 1865 and Archbishop of the province in 1875. He is honoured in the Calendar of Saints of the Anglican Church of Canada with a feast day on March 10.
Grant in the BNJ dates the medal to 1892.
