Schulenburg served in the Saxon and Venetian armies and distinguished himself at the Battle of Fraustadt. He commanded the "stubborn defence" of the island of Corfu against the invading Turks for which he was decorated by the Venetians. His statue can still be seen in Corfu and the legend on the plinth, in an oval wreath, is almost word for word that seen on the reverse of the medal.
