It was at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, on 15 May 1800, that James Hadfield tried to shoot King George III during the playing of the national anthem. Hadfield was acquitted of attempted murder by reason of insanity and died from tuberculosis in Bethlehem Hospital in 1841.
