Foreign Medals, Italy, Florence, Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli (1507–1563), sculptor, architect and (from 1530), Servite friar, cast bronze portrait medal, perhaps a self-portrait, unsigned and undated, bearded bust l., wearing buttoned doublet, IO ANGELVS MO-NTVRSVLI FLORENTI, rev. the Holy Trinity, God the Father above the figure of Christ, his hands raised in blessing, Dove of the Holy Spirit below, within wreath formed of clouds, ET HI TRES VNVM SVNT, 41.5mm, a good, but later cast, very fine

Montorsoli is remembered not just for his original creations but also for his restorations of the Laocoön group, the Apollo Belvedere and further famous classical works in the Vatican, for Pope Clement VII – a commission secured in 1532 by Michelangelo, under whom he had studied. Meanwhile he had been inducted into the Servite Order at Santissima Annunziata in Florence in 1530, taking his vows in 1531. An unassuming medal, it is remarkable for its lack of references. It is not in Armand, either George Hill's Corpus or his Portrait Medals of Italian Artists of the Renaissance, Attwood or Pollard [Kress – 2007].
