Lord Dudley Stuart was the youngest son of the 1st Marquess of Bute and his wife Frances Coutts (daughter of Thomas Coutts). In 1824 he married he married Princess Christine Bonaparte (1798–1847). He was sympathetic to the counties of Eastern Europe in their stand against Russia and was a passionate advocate of Polish independence.
