Count Grigory Grigorievich Orlov was one of Catherine the Great's favourites and had participated in the coup that had dethroned her husband Peter III. When plague broke out in Moscow, Orlov was sent to ensure that the extraordinary measures put in place to prevent transmission of the disease were observed. He ensured that the sick were provided with clothes, food, and money, and was seen around the city helping the afflicted, taking part in religious processions, and otherwise aiding medical professionals. As a result of these ministrations, the plague was suppressed in just four months.
