Sir Thomas Fairbairn, Bt. (1823-1891), was an industrialist and art collector. Fairbairn had been a commissioner of the 1851 Great Exhibition, then Chairman of the Executive Committee for the 1857 Art Treasures Exhibition in his hometown of Manchester. He worked on the International Exhibitions of 1862, 1867 and 1871. Fairbairn finally managed to see the Manchester City Museum and Art Gallery opened in 1882, having worked on the project since 1860.
