This medal commemorates the recovery of £300,000 worth of silver from a Spanish ship wrecked in the West Indies. An initial attempt to recover the treasure during the reign of Charles II had been unsuccessful, but a second expedition underwritten by Christopher, Duke of Albemarle, achieved its aim. The medals, of which this is a modern reproduction, were given to the venture's financial backers and to the king, who gave them out to friends.
