Spencer Perceval was shot as he entered the lobby of the House of Commons by John Bellingham, a bankrupt merchant, who had held Perceval responsible for his plight and of whom a medal was also made (BHM 724; Eimer 1023). To this date Perceval is still the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated.
