The King's Champion depicted on the medal is Henry Dymock (1801-1865), whose family have held and still hold, the hereditary position since the Conquest. The reverse legend, PRO REGE DIMICO is the Dymock family motto. The Champion, in full armour, rode into the Coronation banquet and threw down the gauntlet in the unlikely event that someone might challenge the new King's title to the throne. However, Dymock's horse had been hired from Astley's circus and spooked by the applause it went into a routine of tricks! This was the last Coronation at which the Champion appeared. The Dymock armour, used for every Coronation from James I to George IV, is displayed at Windsor Castle.
