A Collection of Irish Coins, Medals and Tokens, Ireland, George III, pattern penny, 1789, by Mossop, weight 244 grains, the king's bust r., small harp beneath, rev. Britannia joining hands with Hibernia over a flaming altar, two cornucopiae below, CON COR DIA above (Nelson, pp. 50-51, pl. vi.10; DF.609), nearly very fine but considerably damaged, mostly on the obverse, and clumsily holed above the king's head; the edge battered, extremely rare
Nelson quotes from an article by the Very Rev. Henry Dawson, A.M., Dean of St. Patrick's, in TRIA, Vol. XIX, 1838: 'Only six impressions were struck before the die was destroyed, but so admirable was the execution, that two were thought worthy of a place in the cabinet of the reigning monarch.' There are two examples of this pattern in the British Museum Collection.
Formed 80 – 100 years ago, containing interesting pieces that haven't been on the market for years.
(250-350 GBP)
