British Medals, George II, The birth and death of a child to Prince William and Princess Anne of Orange, AR medal, 1736, by N. van Swinderen, crowned oval shields of England and Nassau, lion supporters, rev. seated mother cradles child, 41mm (MI 516/71; Eimer 536; vL suppl. 101), nearly extremely fine
Ex Baldwin's vault.
Princess Anne (1709-1759), eldest daughter of George II and Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach, was the second Princess Royal, being given the title in 1727. Her child, a daughter, lived only a few hours and the medal, which had been prepared in advance, had to be quickly adapted; on the reverse a fruit drops from an orange tree, though the legend SPES ALTERA SURGIT [another hope arises] remained. Anne went on to have three surviving children.
