This important historical coin is an exceptional example of the last style of Unite in the hammered coinage series. From 1663, the innovative Milled Coinage began with the guinea denomination. The surge of new coins made by the milled process resulted in examples such as this disappearing from the historical record as they were melted down to be made into a sparkling, brand-new type of coinage, which found instant approval by the British public. During the coming two centuries, the melting of hammered coins continued, sanctioned by the Royal Mint. By the time collectors grew in numbers and numismatics became more sophisticated, only a tiny fraction of the original mintages of coins such as these remained. This specimen is indeed a rare coin and a pleasing visual treat.
