The city of Kalmar, in what is now southern Sweden, was surrendered to Christian IV by the castle's governor, Christer Abrahamsson Somme, in 1611 and with little resistance. The Kalmark War continued to 1613 when the Peace of Knäred was signed. Kalmar was returned to Sweden after payment of one million thalers.
