Kansu. Republic Sun Yat-sen Dollar Year 17 (1928) MS61 NGC, Lanchow mint, KM-Y410, L&M-618, Kann-760, WS-0720, Wenchao-1034 (rarity 3 stars). Issued under Feng Yu Hsiang. A stand-out type within the Republican series as a whole and the already very challenging and short-lived Kansu series in particular, with Mint State survivors representing an opportunity which most serious Chinese collectors cannot hope to see in their collecting lifetimes--the coin at hand appearing nicer than either of the two pieces in the Goodman collection, while the selection presented in Stack's 2011 sale of the Chin Family, H.T. Nance, Frank Robinson, and Wa She Wong collections contained nothing finer than an XF Details. One of only three examples ranking in this preservation tier across both major grading services, the 1928 Sun Yat-sen dollar represents one of only two issues produced in Kansu, and was clearly meant to act as a response by the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party) to the Yuan Shih-kai dollars first struck in 1914. While both issues could hardly have been struck in large numbers, the Sun Yat-sen Dollars are far rarer, the Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Gold & Silver Coins assigning the type a value twice that of its Yuan Shih-kai predecessor. By far the finest representative we have been able to locate coming to auction in the last several decades, and a clear target for the connoisseur as such.
