Szechuan. Kuang-hsü brass Specimen "Ferracute" Pattern 20 Cents ND (c. 1896/1897) SP62 PCGS, KM-Pn11, Kann-Unl., L&M-Unl., WS-Unl., Wenchao-Unl., Chang Foundation-Unl. Produced by the Ferracute Machine Company of Bridgeton, New Jersey. A famed pattern type, designed by the United States Chief Engraver Charles Barber to demonstrate the potential of modern minting technology to the government of Szechuan and win a contract for supplying the mint in Chengtu. Based very closely on the designs of the 1890 Kwangtung coinage, this piece exhibits superb overall detailing and a slightly speckled tone to the reverse. Currently, only two pieces rank finer at PCGS.
