Szechuan. Republic nickel Pattern 5 Cents Year 14 (1925) AU Details (Planchet Flaw) NGC, KM-Unl., L&M-Unl., Kann-824, CCC-443, CL-Unl. (cf. CL-SCJ.48 for issue of Year 15), Duan-Unl. (cf. Duan-1751-1752; same), HNS-Unl. (cf. HNS-0641-0642; same), Hsu-362. An excessively rare pattern or trial piece for the 5 Cents design first adopted for the circulation coinage of the province of the following year (1926), and surprisingly undocumented in most major references after Kann except for Xu Guan's Chinese Copper Coins Catalog published in 2006. According to our research, only two specimens have come to auction in the last 10+ years--a raw piece in the Norman Jacobs Collection (struck from the same dies) which brought $1600 in 2008, and an XF Details (Surface Hairlines) example in the Wa She Wong Collection which brought $9500 in 2010. Featuring nearly untouched fields thick with die polish, the obverse lamination, or planchet flaw, causing little visual pause.
