Taiwan. Ju-I Military Ration "Lotus" Dollar ND (1853) XF Details (Corrosion, Scratches) NGC, Tainan mint, KM-C25-4 (Rare), L&M-323, Kann-2, WS-1001, Wenchao-178 (rarity 3 stars). Issued by Lin Kung. Struck for use as military payment during the 1853 uprising and an earlier issue, which, like its other peers, saw extensive use in commerce, as indicated by the chopmarks visible over its surfaces. This example is of commendable quality for this usually very crude type, with both the obverse and reverse devices retaining an admirable clarity of detail only minorly impacted by the aforementioned chopmarking. This cannot be said of most survivors, which are often so chopmarked as to require closer examination to discern their original designs. The noted scratches on the obverse appear quite old and nicely toned over, minimizing their impact, while the noted corrosion similarly appears of bare minimum consequence to the strong eye appeal. A deep tone serves to heighten the aesthetic qualities of the piece, which should arguably be experienced in hand for a full sense of appreciation.
