People's Republic gold Proof "Peacock" 1500 Yuan (20 oz) 1993 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, Shanghai mint, KM601, Cheng-pg. 139, 1, CC-543. Mintage: 66. Numbered 21 on the edge. The undisputed "king" of the Peacock series, the 1993 1500 Yuan stands in a class all its own, its mintage of well below 100 pieces struck standing as an instant indicator of its supreme rarity. To date, this is only the second example of the type we have handled, and, according to the most recent edition of the China Pricepedia, only the second to have come to auction in the last five years. Visually, the expansive size of the planchet allows for full appreciation of the deeply cameoed nature of the fields, the devices maintaining a thick degree of mint frost. With no specimens yet achieving technical perfection from NGC, and this falling within the first half of the issue's incredibly limited production run, we cannot doubt that it will likely come fiercely contested by collectors of the series.
