PHRYGIA. Philomelium. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Assarion (Bronze, 22 mm, 6.15 g, 6 h), time of Caracalla, circa 205-209. ΔHMOC ΦΙΛΟMHΛЄⲰN Laureate and draped bust of the Demos to left. Rev. ΦΙΛΟMHΛЄ[ⲰN] Dionysos standing front, head to left, holding kantharos in his right hand and thyrsos in his left. BMC -. Martin -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Leypold -. SNG von Aulock -. Unpublished and unique. Small scuff on the reverse edge, otherwise, very fine.
This piece is stylistically very close to Martin's Philomelion 1, which records the name of the strategos Akoutos, who appears on coins of Julia Domna, Caracalla Augustus and Geta Caesar. Given the adolescent portrait of Caracalla and the lack of coins in the name of Plautilla, the tenure of Akoutos should likely be dated to 205-209.
