GALATIA. Pessinus. Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Tetrassarion (Orichalcum, 26 mm, 11.30 g, 7 h). AYT K M AYPHΛIOC•ANTΩNEINOC Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius to right, seen from behind. Rev. CEB TOΛICTOBΩ ΠECCINOYN Kybele seated left, wearing kalathos, holding patera in her right hand and leaning left on tympanon. RPC IV -. Apparently unpublished and unique. A boldly struck coin with a very interesting reverse legend. Retoned, otherwise, about extremely fine.


The Tolistobogii mentioned on the reverse of this beautiful coin were one of the Celtic tribes that migrated to central Asia Minor in the 3rd century BC, an area that was consequently named Galatia after its Gaulish inhabitants.
