Septimius Severus, 193-211. Seal (Lead, 22 mm, 16.76 g), signed by Tiberius. AVG - SEV - TIB Laureate head of Septimius Severus to the right. Rev. Blank. CNG 179 (2008), 304 and 334 (2014), 338. Very well preserved for the type, with a complete inscription. Some deposits on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.
The imperial portrait was used on a number of lead seals by officials, institutions and bureaucracy. Thus, even though it bears the name, title and portrait of the emperor Septimius, this seal was very likely not that of the emperor himself, but of Tiberius, the official whose name appears below the emperor's portrait.
