UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Mid 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 17 mm, 4.76 g, 7 h), 'Early Group'. Imitating Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, 138-161. AVRELIVS CAE-SAR A[VG] PII F Head of Marcus Aurelius to right. Rev. TR POT III - COS [II] Bonus Eventus standing right, holding grain ears in her right hand and plate of fruits in her left. Aurum Barbarorum I & II -. Cf. Calicó 1930 (for prototype). With original suspension loop decorated with XXX / XX attached. Numerous bangs and scrapes and the flan somewhat wavy, otherwise, fair.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

The poor condition of this piece makes it very difficult to judge whether it is a very good imitation or an official aureus that made it into the Barbaricum. The style is (or was), in any case, excellent.
