CELTIC, Lower Danube. Uncertain tribe. 2nd-1st centuries BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 3.22 g, 12 h), 'Barbarous' imitation of Alexander III. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. Barbarized legend Zeus seated left, holding eagle in his right hand and scepter in his left; to left, forepart of a 'lion' to left. Cf. Price B12, B14, B15, B17 and B19. Cleaning scratches, otherwise, very fine.

The course style and misspelling of Alexander's name show this to be what Price calls a 'barbarous' issue. Price distinguished between barbarous and imitative issues, noting that the latter were manufactured with the intent to defraud and are often plated, while the former, also often plated, are mere copies and were produced along the fringes of the Greek world.
