CILICIA. Hierapolis-Castabala. Commodus, 180-192. (Bronze, 33 mm, 16.58 g, 5 h). Ι-EΡΟΠΟΛEΙΤΩΝ ΚΑCΤΑΒΑΛEΩΝ Draped bust of youthful Dionysus, wearing ivy wreath, holding thyrsus over his far shoulder; bunch of grapes to right. Rev. ΑVΤ ΚΑΙ Μ ΚOΜOΔΟC EYΤ-YΧ Commodus in military dress standing facing, head to left, holding Nike and long scepter. RPC IV online 6184. SNG von Aulock 5575. With a fine green patina; particularly rare, especially without the usual countermarks. Very fine.
In contrary to the way this type is described by the RPC, the structure of this coin proves that Commodus is actually on the reverse die. This makes it a rather exciting coin: having the emperor, and his titles, on the reverse is most unexpected.
