Claudius. AD 41-54. Fourée Denarius (20mm, 3.63 g, 3h). Copying a Rome mint of AD 52. Laureate head right / S P Q R/ P P/ OB C S in three lines within oak-wreath. Cf. RIC I 64; cf. RSC 96. Toned, surface corrosion or breaks in plating, reverse scratch. VF.
Though we describe this coin as a fourée, and numerous surface breaks are noted, the metal underneath appears to be lighter gray in color than one would expect from the usual fourée, opening the possibility that this is merely a corroded full-silver issue. We also note that the style also appears to be quite close to that of an official issue, which can occur with fourées of this period.
