Sportack (p. 2281) notes that a very small number of proofs were struck from dies 3/3, and that regular strikes created immediately after these had proof-like polish in the fields. The rare proofs can be distinguished by very sharp edges to the letters, while the proof-like regular issues exhibit some softness around the letters.
