IRELAND. Charles II. 1645-1685. Æ halfpenny. 8.21 gm. 26 mm. Armstrong & Legg's Regal Coinage. 1683. His bust right / Harp. S. 6575. Nelson, p. 18ff. Good Very Fine; bold portrait.
Yet another chapter of "small change" and "underweight" problems.... The English king Charles II gave Sir Thomas Armstrong and Col. George Legg permission to coin copper for Ireland. They were to pay Charles £16 13s 4d per year. Their coinage was heavier and finer than the private issues and counterfeits circulating at the time. The coinage seems to have been well accepted and well used–high quality examples of the issue are scarce.
