A Roman sardonyx cameo with a portrait of Tranquillina (?). 3rd century AD. 36mm. From a private collection
Furia Sabinia Tranquillina (226-after 244) was a Roman empress and the wife of Gordian III. She was the young daughter of the praetorian prefect Timesitheus. Historians are inclined to believe that marriage, though born to political interests, was really a union of hearts and the confirmation would be the representation of the many coins minted back in a short period.
