GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, ND (1551-53). London Mint; im: Tun. Edward VI. PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, AU Details Gold Shield.
S-2450; Fr-186; N-1927. Weight: 11.24 gms. A very attractive and nicely preserved example of this large size early gold issue featuring a half length armored bust of the monarch right with clear devices and legends on both sides with signs of handling consistent for the grade. Lovely sunset hued patina radiates from the bold devices displaying much originality adding to is pleasing appearance and desirability. A couple of light unobtrusive small scratches behind the bust account for the details designation of "Graffiti" and in the opinion of this cataloger seems a bit harsh and unwarranted. Despite its shortcomings a very attractive representative of the this seldom encountered type in fairly high graded with good eye appeal worth of serious consideration from advanced collectors.

During Edward's relatively short reign he was governed by a Regency Council since taking the throne at the age of nine, he was never able to gain control. Social unrest and economic problems were real issues for him with an unsuccessful war with Scotland and the transformation of the Church into a recognized Protestant body. He fell terminally ill early in 1553 and died on 6 July the same year at the age of 15.

Estimate: $15000.00- $25000.00
