RUSSIA. Mint Error -- Reverse Lamination -- Silver Ruble Pattern, 180(6). St. Petersburg Mint. Alexander I. NGC AU-58.
23.46 gms. Bit-666 (R3); Sev-2565 (R4); KM-Pn70. By C. Leberecht. Obverse: Military bust right; Reverse: Crowned imperial double eagle facing, with coat-of-arms on breast, crown above, and holding orb and scepter in talons. This INCREDIBLY RARE pattern issue--overstruck on a ruble of Catherine II (the Great)--stands as one of the more difficult pieces to acquire in the Russian series, with even Grand Duke Mikhailovich lacking a specimen! A lamination issue is noted on the reverse between the first two digits of the date, but can easily be ignored given the importance of the type and the prior use of the host. The edge mostly appears as plain, though there are a few areas of engrailing visible, likely a holdover of the undertype. Compare to the Sincona specimen, which realized a hammer of 300,000 ChF [!] in 2013.

Estimate: $30000.00- $45000.00
