CHILE. Silvered Copper 8 Escudos Pattern, 1836-So IJ. Santiago Mint. NGC MS-63.
KM-PnA6; Onza-1635 (although incorrectly cited as tin). Reeded Edge variety. A superbly manufactured example of this much RARER variety, struck from the same dies as the previous lot, but with a beautiful silver finish that results in strong prooflike reflectivity in the fields. The single finest we have seen of this variety and correspondingly, the single finest graded by either NGC or PCGS.

Referring back to the archived correspondence noted in the previous lot, it is clear that in addition to this pattern being struck on the old screw presses of the Santiago Mint, as well as the newly installed Thonnelier press, a handful of samples were sent from Paris with the shipment. While unproven, it seems logical that these silvered copies were those samples, as we are unaware of the practice of silvering being a capability of the Santiago Mint at this time.

From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.

Estimate: $1500.00- $3000.00
