COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1789-NR JJ. Nuevo Reino Mint. Charles III. NGC MS-61.
KM-50.1a; Onza-896; Restrepo-72.38a. The final Charles III issue that, in a similar fashion to many of the coins from the Eliasberg Collection, displays vivid peripheral tone that presents in copper, maroon and blue shades. In the centers, the strike is superb for the type and the surrounding luster amplifies the appearance. A few marks are scattered about, but none distract the eye. Once graded MS-62 when we sold it in the Eliasberg sale (where it was "certified" but not holdered), but seemingly not honored when it was later sent for encapsulation. Even with the lesser grade, it is still only surpassed by a single MS-62+ in the NGC census. That coin almost certainly lacks the unique character and pedigree of this piece.

From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.

Ex: Eliasberg Collection (ANR 4/2005) Lot # 1510.

Ex: John Clapp Collection (Private transaction to Eliasberg 1942).

Plate Coin in Wayte Raymond's Spanish American Gold Coins (1936).

Estimate: $3000.00- $4000.00
